A Bristol Bucket List

As any regular here will know, I am ALL about Lists, particularly ones that list cool activities and tasks.

They are the perfect way to never be bored; there is always something you can do. So obsessed am I with lists, that I have developed another one. A Bristol Bucket List.

Many of my non-Bristolian friends rave about how much they love the city, and as a life-long dweller, I appreciate that I have been a bit complacent when it comes to enjoying the best it has too offer.

This is why the decision has been made to utilise the city I live in; there is so much going on in terms of events and festivals, places to visit, foodie establishments, shows to watch and cultural activities to try out.

Instead of whiling away the next couple of years before I can do my year in Japan I really should be putting some short-term plans in place.

It is all very well having my Kettle List, but some of that stuff is a bit long-term or will involve me having to save up a bit of cash (and holiday time from work) – which could potentially be a bit discouraging as I am not ticking off as much as I want.

Visit Bristol

A lust for lists

I have, therefore, come up with a quick and simple solution, to keep me involved with my lists, even if I can’t leave the city or I am feeling a bit skint :

While an official one exists, it is a bit… meh.

Most of those things aren’t even in Bristol!

So I have made my own, and much like my previous lists there are sections:

Polly’s Bristol Bucket List

Art & Culture

Bristol is home to some great artists, loads of museums and many cultural events. Any Bristol Bucket List would have to include a few of the following:

Watch a foreign film at the Watershed – 17th March 2024 – Watched the Japanese film ‘perfect Days with Fumio

Go on an official Streetart tour

Visit the BBC Building

Attend a free lecture

Actually, go in the Arnolfini – I’ve walked past it so many times! – February 2023 – day out with Fumio. Very interesting place!

Food & Drink

There is something for everyone in Bristol if food is your thing. Not only is it where you will find the best burrito in the west, but there are all-you-can-eat restaurants, and one of the best street food scenes in the country. Here are a few things I intend to try out:

Visit a ‘posh’ restaurant

Try locally-made drinks

Go on a river booze cruise

Meet the cats at ‘The Bag of Nails’

Try some street food at St Nick’s Market

Find an amazing independent coffee shop – Got to be Dareshack, on wine Street. With Exchange coming in a close second.

Out & About

Despite having lived here all my life, there are some things I have yet to try. They have made their way into this section of the list:

Complete the orienteering trail at Ashton Court

Visit the Wild Place

The Wild Place Project

Visit the Aquarium

A Wintery photo on the Christmas Steps.

Finally, go to the Observatory

Festival Fun

Well-known for its international festivals, here are the ones that really need to be on any fest fans bucket list:

Balloon Festival

Harbour Festival

Upfest

Redfest

Grillstock

Getting Active

These are a few activities I have been meaning to try for years. If I put them on a list I may feel more of an obligation to get them done!

Go indoor climbing

Visit the Lido

Try out paddle boarding on the docks

That gives me 24 things to try. The plan is to pick a few each year to focus on, that way they will be easier to achieve.

Over to you

What kind of list would you make for your home town?

Are there things you haven’t tried yet?

What would you recommend to visitors?

Maybe I could have a list of things to try in your city?
